Mother of Buffalo

I am currently working this documentary about Jean Leung, who looks after the 100-head population of wild water buffalo on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island.

Imported to the island in the 1950s to labor in the fields, the buffalo were out of work by the 1980s and left to their own devices to roam the island. But now their days appear numbered. Population growth and illegal development continue to shrink the buffalos’ protected wetland habitat, and a massive government housing project threatens to change the island dramatically. The local community is divided: some love the animals, others feel they are a dangerous, dirty nuisance. Nearly all have been sterilized, making this the likely final generation. Every single day, 70-year-old Jean pursues her diligent, difficult work… 15 years and counting.

The film is nearly complete and preparing for festival submissions.
