Born in Mexico and raised in Texas, Luis Arturo Tapia has been based in Shanghai for 16 years, and works worldwide as a director, cinematographer, and producer.
Luis' documentary work includes the story of an up-and-coming Shanghai indie music group in Up from the Underground, a look at the early days of crowd-sourced vigilantism in Human Flesh Search Engine, and a chronicle of four British bands on pioneering music tours across China in From Wrexham to Wuhan. Luis spent six months traveling the globe filming a documentary about pop icon Faye Wong.
He wrote and directed the short film Furnaces, about an industrial land deal gone awry, as well as Hukou, the story of a father enlisting a private detective to track down his wayward son. In summer 2018 he finished the horror comedy short film This Will End Badly, currently submitting to festivals. Next up is the imminent release of his web series ORO.
Luis has directed videos for dozens of global brands, including recent projects for Alibaba, Alitrip, Apple, Alipay, Chevy, Citroen, Disney, Dove, Kerry Properties/Shangri-La Hotels, NBA, NFL, Pacific Insurance, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Taobao, and Tmall.
Luis earned a degree in East Asian Studies from Princeton University and speaks fluent English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. He is certified in the USA as a commercial drone pilot and always looking for excuses to get his Inspire 2 airborne.
