Born in Mexico and raised in Texas, Luis Arturo Tapia has been based in Shanghai for fifteen years. Luis is a director, producer, and frequent cinematographer. He is certified in the USA as a commercial drone pilot and always looking for excuses to get his Inspire 2 airborne.
Luis' documentary work includes the story of an up-and-coming Shanghai indie music group in Up from the Underground, a look at the early days of crowd-sourced vigilantism in Human Flesh Search Engine, and a chronicle of four British bands on pioneering music tours across China in From Wrexham to Wuhan. Most recently, Luis spent the second half of 2016 following pop icon Faye Wong around the world, filming a documentary about her long-awaited return to the stage.
He wrote and directed the short film Furnaces, about an industrial land deal gone awry, as well as Hukou, the story of a father enlisting a private detective to track down his wayward son. His latest film, the dark comedy This Will End Badly, is currently in post-production.
Luis has directed videos for dozens of global brands, including recent projects for Alibaba, Alitrip, Apple, Alipay, Chevy, Citroen, Disney, Dove, Kerry Properties/Shangri-La Hotels, NBA, NFL, Pacific Insurance, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Taobao, and Tmall.
Luis earned a degree in East Asian Studies from Princeton University and speaks fluent English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.
